How to Sell an Online Course in Squarespace [2024 Guide]
Whether you’re Tori Tattoo, a Liverpool based tattoo artist who mentors beginner artists, or Kitty Gonzalez, a yoga instructor teaching remotely from New York - offering online courses can be an excellent way to grow your brand and increase revenue.
Squarespace offers powerful, user-friendly tools that make it easy to sell an online course directly through your website - without needing third-party platforms. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the process of setting up and selling your online course on your Squarespace website!
Step 1: Create a Dedicated Course Page
Before we can start selling your course, you’ll want to create a dedicated course landing page on your Squarespace website. This page will serve as your primary sales page, where users can learn about your course, see the curriculum, and make a purchase.
Here’s what to include on your course page:
Course description: Provide a detailed overview of what the course covers and who it’s for.
Course benefits: Explain how taking this course will help students achieve their goals.
Course curriculum: Break down the modules and lessons so potential students know exactly what they’re getting.
Call to action (CTA): Encourage users to sign up with a clear, compelling CTA like “Enroll Now” or “Get Started Today.”
Here’s an example of how we designed Tori Tattoo’s landing page to show potential clients what is included in her online course:
For Tori’s course landing page, we included an engaging explainer video, a description of the course, information for each module, and further down we also included testimonials and the course price. Each section has an “Get Started Now” button (call to action) which takes the user to the paywall for the online course.
Step 2: Set Up Product Listings for Your Course
Selling an online course on Squarespace requires setting up your course as a product. Here’s how to do it:
Firstly, in your Squarespace dashboard, go to the “Products & Services” tab and select “Content & Memberships”.
Next, click “Create” and choose “Course” for your online course. Here you can name your course, and then choose a template for your course’s content page. In “Course Content”, you can create your course’s chapters and individual lessons, and upload the lesson’s video as well as additional information and files including text, PDFs, and audio directly to each lesson.
You can see above that for Tori Tattoo’s course, we had several chapters/modules, and in each of these we included one or multiple lessons. Each lesson includes a video, as well as accompanying text and resources, such as downloadable PDF files.
Finally, you’ll want to setup your pricing plan for your paywall if you intend to monetize your online course. Click "Pricing Plans” and create a new plan. Here you can name your course, add a small description, list the benefits as bullet-points and choose your price.
Squarespace allows you to set-up your price as a one-time payment, a split payment, or a recurring subscription plan, so you can select what works best for you and your customers!
Once your pricing plan is set-up, you can add a Digital Product Block to your course’s landing page which will automatically list all of the above, as well as give the user the option to sign-up to the course through the button. Below is an example of how this block looks on Tori Tattoo’s course landing page.
Step 3: Set Up Payment and Checkout Options
Squarespace makes it easy to accept payments for your online course. You can use integrated payment processor gateways including Stripe, PayPal, or Square.
To set your payments up, head over to your site dashboard and then “Settings”. In the settings menu, click the “Selling” tab and then “Payments”. From here you can connect your preferred payment processor and you’ll now be able to accept payments for your online course, as well as select your store’s currency! It’s as easy as that.
Step 4: Promote Your Online Course
Now that your course is set up and you’re ready to take payments - it’s time to market it.
Use Squarespace’s built-in marketing tools to promote your online course:
Email campaigns: Build an email list using the Newsletter block and send promotional campaigns using Squarespace Email Campaigns. This is a great way to announce to your email list that your online course is now available, and we implemented this strategy for Tori Tattoo’s Online Masterclass course.
Social media: Share your course on social media platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Squarespace allows direct social sharing, making it easier to spread the word.
Blogging: Publish SEO-optimized blog posts related to your course content. You can write some information about your niche, and promote your course here if any readers want to learn more.
